Disputed, either:
- Guaraní uruá, y (literally “water snail”), from uruá (“apple snail”) + y (“water”); or
- Guaraní uru (quail), gua, y (literally “quail living by the river”) from uru (“quail”) + gua (“from”) + y (“water”).
Quail are upland birds, so Snail River is the likely explanation.
